Tips For Looking After Your Bedsheets

We recently talked to you about the best luxury pillows to get a great night’s sleep. But it’s also important the parts of you that aren’t on the pillow are equally well looked after.

Here are some vital tips for taking care of your bedsheets, to ensure they take care of you.

1) Buy better bedsheets

Yes, it’s an obvious answer – but if you invest in quality, you’re less likely to need to replace them after a short time. That doesn’t mean just spending more money – take note of considerations like threadcount and fabric type. While higher-quality fitted and bespoke bedsheets may cost more initially, the longevity and comfort over time should prove their worth.

2) Washing techniques, frequency and rotation

Ideally, your cotton and linen sheets should see a warm (40°C) wash every week. This should be a typically sufficient temperature to remove dirt while still being gentle on the fabric. Once a week will prevent the build-up of skin cells, body oils and dust mites that can collect on your sheets during sleep. For white sheets, an occasional hot wash (60°C) can help maintain brightness – but use a milder, pH-neutral detergent if possible. These tend to be free from optical brighteners and harsher chemicals that can harm natural fibres such as organic cotton over time.

And another seemingly obvious tip – the more sheets you have in rotation, the longer they last. With one set of sheets on the bed, one in the wash and one in storage, you reduce wear-and-tear and the risk of sets becoming threadbare.

3) Drying and ironing

It’s not the easiest in the British weather – but line drying whenever possible is best for your sheets. Sunlight naturally brightens without chemicals, while fresh air helps to disinfect. But if you do need to tumble dry, opt for a low heat and remove before fully dry to reduce wrinkles and damage to fibres. To get that ‘hotel-crisp’ feeling, ironing your sheets should be done while they’re still slightly damp. A medium hot iron is more than sufficient for cotton sheets, while linen sheets only need a light iron.

4) Storing your bedsheets

Opt for a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight to keep your sheets fresh and airy. Avoid storing in any kind of plastic container, which may retain moisture and damage materials.
